Frieda Obermaier Howling, age 97 of Stratford, passed away October 8, 2017. She was born in Munich, Germany, May 17, 1920 and came to this country when she was a young girL. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Art from Douglass College, Rutgers University, she worked as a Fashion Coordinator and model in New York City. Later she received a Master’s Degree in Interior Design from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She would go on to become an artist, print maker, teacher, and a writer. She and her family spent several years in Beirut, Lebanon where she taught Art at the Lebanese American University and later moved to Saudi Arabia. Upon moving to Connecticut, she taught Art at Branford High School for twenty years. After retiring, she devoted herself to her art which includes abstract oil, black and white line prints, box constructions, stained glass and assemblages many of which grace private collections in the United States and abroad and also hang in several corporate collections (www. friedahowling.com has samples of her work). She has had numerous solo shows throughout the United States as well as Munich, Berlin, and Beirut. In addition to many articles, she has published a book, “Art In Lebanon 1930-1975” (2005) in which she chronicles the paintings and sculptures of the first Lebanese contemporary artists. She is survived by her children, Robert Howling and family of Collegeville, PA and Karen Howling of Stratford. Calling hours will be held Saturday October 14th from 12pm to 2pm at the Smith Funeral Home, 135 N. Broad St., Milford. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
