Obituary for Richard Wiedl

Richard “Rick” Joseph Wiedl, 71, of Oxford, passed into the loving arms of the Lord on August 8, 2018. His beloved wife, Susan, was at his side. Rick and Susan had been married for nearly 46 years. Rick was the son of the late Joseph and Edna Wiedl. He was born and raised in Milford. He graduated from Jonathan Law High School in 1964. In the spring of 1968, he graduated from Springfield College where he enjoyed playing varsity football. After graduating from college, he served in the Air Force being stationed in Viet Nam from 1968-1969. Rick enjoyed coaching all sports. Rick was Foran High School’s Head football and wrestling coach, an assistant football coach at Yale University and assistant athletic trainer for wrestling at the 1976 Olympics. He also was a Director at the SVS Hockey Camp and coached both his sons’ Pop Warner Football teams. Rick taught Physical Education, General Science, and Biology in the Milford Public School System from the early 1970’s until his retirement in 2010. He was active in Milford’s adult education classes teaching Computer Literacy. He directed the Milford Public School System Summer Education Program for six years. On behalf of Dr. Michael Gavin, he wrote and monitored the Milford Fire Dept. Physical Fitness test. After retirement from teaching, he enjoyed remote control aircrafts. He was a member of the Quaker Farms R/C Aircraft Club. Rick was a past member of the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Woodbridge. More recently, he attended the Woodland Church of Christ in Oxford. Rick is survived by his loving wife, Susan Wiedl, his two devoted sons, Major Michael Wiedl and his wife Dr. Erica Wiedl of Virginia and Steven Wiedl of Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl Rodriguez of Florida, several nieces and nephews and his best friend since childhood, Robert Allen Simpson. Funeral arrangements are being conducted by the Smith Funeral Home in Milford. Friends are invited to attend the calling hours on Tuesday August 14th from 4 until 7 pm and a church service at the Woodland Church of Christ 63 Ancient Highway in Oxford, Wednesday August 15th at 1pm. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Smilow for their loving care, kindness, and expertise. Memorial donations, for those who so desire may be made to the Smilow Cancer Center c/o Yale New Haven Hospital, or the USO.
