William J. Petrie, age 80 of Bridgeport, passed away March 21, 2018 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford. William was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, March 13, 1938, son of the late William H. and Regina Jansen Petrie. Mr. Petrie was a proud veteran of the US Army and worked as a cabinet maker for Conrail for many years until his retirement. Very active in sports and the community, he was a member of the Scottish Clan MacGregor of New York, and the Milford Irish Heritage Society. He also was one of the founding members of both the Milford United Soccer Club and Youth Hockey both of which he was a coach. He also coached soccer at Jonathan Law High School and was an avid golfer in many golf leagues in the local area. He is survived by his children Douglas Petrie (Barbara) of Shelton, Robin Austin of Milford, and Robert Petrie (Natalee) of Milford, his 6 grandchildren Douglas Jr. and Alec Petrie, William (Amanda) and Christopher Austin, and Heather Rose and Jaret Petrie, his brother Robert Petrie of Scotland, and his sister Margaret McCabe (John) of Scotland, and several nieces and nephews in Scotland. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, William Petrie. Calling hours will be held Friday March 30th from 5pm to 8 pm at Smith Funeral Home, 135 N. Broad St., Milford. A funeral service will be held Saturday March 31st at 6pm in the funeral home. Military Honors will immediately follow the service. Interment will be private. The family would like to thank his good friend David Ambrose for his excellent care and Connecticut Hospice for their excellent care of William.
